How Long You Have
7 months (3 before + birthday month + 3 after)

The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. This is your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B.

Enrolling before your birthday month means your coverage starts on the first of that month. Enrolling during or after your birthday month may delay your coverage start date. Missing your IEP without qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period can result in a permanent late enrollment penalty added to your Part B premium.

If you're still working and covered by an employer plan, you may be able to delay enrollment without penalty — but verify this with a licensed Medicare advisor before assuming you qualify.
