Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs every year from January 1 through March 31. It gives people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan a second chance to make one change if their AEP choice isn't working out.

During OEP you can: switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to a different Medicare Advantage plan, or drop Medicare Advantage entirely and return to Original Medicare (and join a Part D plan).

What you cannot do during OEP: switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, make changes if you're not already in a Medicare Advantage plan, or add/change Medigap coverage. Changes made during OEP take effect the first of the following month.
