Awendaw is a small town north of Charleston on the edge of the Francis Marion National Forest. Settlers from Salem, Massachusetts, who left after the witch trials, founded it as Wappetaw in 1696, and the Sewee people before them named the area, a name thought to mean red clay. The Sewee Shell Mound, an oyster shell mound built by the Sewee, is the northernmost in a chain of shell rings stretching to the tip of Florida and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town incorporated in 1992 and had 1,399 residents at the 2020 Census.
Awendaw is a quiet, mostly rural community, and care means a drive to Mount Pleasant or Charleston. Check that those hospitals and your primary care doctor are in network. If a hurricane threatens, Part D plans must allow early refills once an emergency is declared. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, and Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
