About Beaufort

Beaufort is the county seat of Beaufort County and the second-oldest city in South Carolina after Charleston. British colonists chartered it in 1711 and named it for Henry Somerset, the 2nd Duke of Beaufort. It sits on Port Royal Island in the Sea Islands, a landscape of marsh and tidal river, and had 13,607 residents at the 2020 Census. Its 304-acre downtown Historic District is a National Historic Landmark, and the Reconstruction Era National Monument, established in 2017, marks the area's role in that period.

Things to do

  • Walk the Historic District's antebellum streets and the Point neighborhood
  • See the Parish Church of St. Helena, founded in 1712
  • Visit the Beaufort National Cemetery and Pigeon Point Community Park
  • Catch a show or exhibit at ARTworks, the community arts center, or stop by the Kazoo Museum
  • Drive out to Hunting Island State Park, the state's most visited state park

Local events

The Beaufort Shrimp Festival celebrates the local shrimping industry the first weekend of October. A Taste of Beaufort fills the first Saturday of May with local restaurants, wine and live music, and the Beaufort International Film Festival runs over Presidents' Day weekend in February.

Healthcare close to home

Beaufort Memorial Hospital, a 197-bed nonprofit hospital at 955 Ribaut Road, is the largest medical facility between Charleston and Savannah. Naval Hospital Beaufort serves military families in nearby Port Royal.

Medicare in Beaufort

Because Beaufort Memorial is the area's main hospital, the first question for any plan here is whether it and your doctors are in network. Many Beaufort-area households include military retirees. If that is you, TRICARE For Life works alongside Medicare and requires you to keep Part A and Part B, so enroll on time. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, and Abilla Advisors can compare what is offered in Beaufort County against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you.
