Greenville is the Upstate's biggest city, with 70,720 residents at the 2020 Census. Lemuel J. Alston founded the village of Pleasantburg in 1797, and it was renamed Greenville in 1821 and chartered as a city in 1869. By 1915 it was known as the Textile Center of the South. Michelin moved its North American headquarters here in 1984 and BMW opened its first plant outside Germany nearby in 1994, and the city has since turned its mill-town downtown into a walkable center with the Reedy River at its heart.
Artisphere fills a weekend each spring, Fall for Greenville is a three-day music and food street festival each fall, and First Fridays Gallery Crawl runs monthly.
Greenville Memorial Medical Center and Hillcrest and Patewood hospitals are part of Prisma Health, and Bon Secours St. Francis runs downtown and Eastside campuses. Shriners Hospital for Children and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville are here too.
With two large health systems, Prisma Health and Bon Secours St. Francis, plans can differ a lot in which hospitals and doctors they include, so check your own list before choosing. Many people in the Greenville area retire from large employers like Michelin and BMW, and leaving employer coverage can open a special enrollment period. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Abilla Advisors can compare Greenville County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
