About Johns Island

Johns Island is the largest island in South Carolina, at 84 square miles, and the fourth-largest on the U.S. East Coast. It is named for Saint John Parish in Barbados, home of its first English settlers. The Stono Rebellion began here on September 9, 1739. Civil rights leader Esau Jenkins founded The Progressive Club on River Road in 1948, and its clubhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. The island is a mix of farms, Gullah Geechee communities and fast-growing neighborhoods.

Things to do

  • Stand under the Angel Oak, a live oak estimated at 400 to 500 years old
  • Ride the 20 miles of trails at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center
  • Visit Legare Farms, established in 1725, or pick up produce from Lowland Farms or Joseph Fields Farm, a third-generation Gullah Geechee organic farm
  • See Johns Island Presbyterian Church, first built in 1719

Local food

The island is known for tomatoes and other farm produce, along with fish, shellfish and oysters from its rivers and marshes.
