Kiawah Island is a gated barrier island about 25 miles southwest of Charleston, with 2,013 full-time residents at the 2020 Census and more than 10,000 in the busy season. English colonists settled nearby at Charlestowne Landing in 1670, led by the Kiawah cassique. The island was used for cattle farming before the Civil War and for logging in the 1950s, and became a resort and residential community after 1974, when Royal's heirs sold it to the Kuwait Investment Corporation. The Town of Kiawah Island was established in 1988.
Kiawah has a large share of retirees and second-home owners, and hospital care means a drive into Charleston. If you split the year between Kiawah and another state, your plan choice matters: Medicare Advantage networks are local, while a Medicare Supplement works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
