Lady's Island lies just across the Beaufort River from downtown Beaufort. Royal Governor Joseph Blake renamed it in 1698 in honor of his wife, Lady Elizabeth Axtell Blake. The island was settled long before that by the Coosaw band of Native Americans, who prepared oysters from the Coosaw River on the high ground of Coosaw Point. A first bridge connected it to downtown Beaufort in 1927, and a second bridge to Port Royal followed in the 1980s. Former plantation and timber tracts have since become residential neighborhoods, though maritime forest, horse farms and waterfront with community boat ramps are still part of the landscape.
Lady's Island is a short drive from Beaufort Memorial Hospital at 955 Ribaut Road, so the main hospital is close. Most of the island is unincorporated Beaufort County.
