Myrtle Beach is the center of the Grand Strand, with 35,682 residents at the 2020 Census and more than 20 million visitors a year. The area was once home to the Waccamaw people. The post office here was first called Withers, then renamed Myrtle Beach around 1900 for the wax myrtle shrub. The Conway and Seashore Railroad began daily service on May 1, 1900, and the city was incorporated in 1957. The Myrtle Beach Air Force Base closed in 1993, and its land is now The Market Common.
Canadian-American Days has run each March since 1951, Sun Fun Festival is in early June, and Myrtle Beach Bike Week has been held since 1940.
Grand Strand Medical Center is a 369-bed acute care hospital and Level 1 Adult Trauma Center known for cardiology, heart surgery and stroke care. It opened in 1978.
Myrtle Beach has a large retiree population and many part-year residents. If you split the year between Horry County and another state, your plan choice matters: Medicare Advantage networks are local, while a Medicare Supplement works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. If you recently moved here, a change of address can open a special enrollment period. Abilla Advisors can compare Horry County plans against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you.
