Piedmont is a small mill town on the Saluda River, known to Native Americans and early settlers as the Big Shoals of the Saluda, a river crossing. David Garrison built a grist mill here around 1850 and the area became Garrison Shoals. Henry Pinckney Hammett built a cotton mill powered by the shoals, which began operating in 1876, and Piedmont was added to the charter of the Piedmont Manufacturing Company. The mills were sold to J.P. Stevens in 1946, manufacturing ended in 1977, and a fire destroyed most of the old company in 1983. The town had 5,411 residents at the 2020 Census.
