Active, travelling retirees weigh low premiums against flexibility. Here is how Medicare Advantage and Medigap compare, with the latest enrollment data.
If you golf, travel and spend months away, the Medicare Advantage versus Medigap choice looks different than it does for most people.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private plan. Many have low or $0 premiums, include drug coverage, and add extras like dental or vision, but you use the plan's network rules and pay copays or coinsurance up to a yearly out-of-pocket maximum.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and helps pay the costs Medicare leaves behind. It costs a monthly premium on top of Part B and a separate drug plan, but it is accepted nationwide by any provider that accepts Medicare.
| Medicare Advantage | Original Medicare + Medigap | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly premium | Often low or $0, plus your Part B premium | Medigap premium, plus Part B and a drug plan |
| Choice of doctors | Plan network rules apply | Any provider that accepts Medicare |
| Drug coverage | Often included | Separate Part D plan |
| Extras | Often dental, vision, hearing | Not included in Medigap |
| Cost when you use care | Copays up to a yearly out-of-pocket maximum | Medigap covers much of what Medicare leaves behind, depending on the plan letter |
Frequent travellers often value Medigap's nationwide flexibility. Others prefer a Medicare Advantage plan's lower premium and added benefits. Neither is better for everyone, and the right answer depends on your doctors, your drugs and how much you are away.
Medicare Advantage has grown from 19% of eligible beneficiaries in 2007 to 55% in 2026, according to KFF. That growth is why it is worth comparing carefully, since networks, benefits and costs differ widely from plan to plan.
