Sun City Hilton Head Sits in Two Counties. Why Neighbors Can Have Different Medicare Plans

Sun City sits between Beaufort and Jasper counties, and Medicare plans are sold by county. Here is why two neighbors can see different options, using BlueCross's 2027 plans as an example.

Sun City Hilton Head: Two Counties, Different Medicare Plans

Sun City Hilton Head Sits in Two Counties. Your Medicare Options May Depend on Your Address.

Medicare Advantage plans are sold by county. In a community that crosses a county line, neighbors can see different choices.

Why county lines matter

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans file a service area with Medicare, usually by county. The plans you can join are the ones offered in the county where you live, and your address decides which county that is. Sun City Hilton Head is described as sitting between Beaufort and Jasper counties, so two Sun City neighbors can live in different counties.

An example: BlueCross in 2027

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina's plan page for 2027 lists three Medicare Advantage options. BlueCross Total, with a $48 premium in the Lowcountry and both preventive and comprehensive dental, is listed for Jasper County but not Beaufort County. BlueCross Total Value ($0 premium, preventive dental) and BlueCross Blue Basic ($0 premium) are listed for both. A tracker of plan endings says BlueCross Total is leaving Beaufort County for 2027.

What this does not mean

This is one company. Other insurers sell plans in both counties, and their service areas are different. The point is not that one county is better. It is that you should compare the plans offered at your own address, not the ones a neighbor mentions.

How to find your county

Check your property tax bill, your voter registration, or your county tax record. Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov also asks for your ZIP code and then your county. If your ZIP code spans two counties, it will ask you to choose.

If your plan is leaving

If you got a non-renewal letter, you are not losing Medicare. You can pick a new plan during Annual Enrollment, and people whose plan is ending also get a special enrollment period.
