An older community than most

The 2020 census counted 37,661 people on Hilton Head Island, with a median age of 59.3. About 39.6% were 65 or older, compared with 28.4% in all of Beaufort County. Nearly 17% of households have someone 65 or older living alone, which makes clear, local help especially useful.

If you live here year-round

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are sold by county, so your options depend on where you live. Hilton Head is in Beaufort County, which means plan changes that affect Beaufort County affect you. Check each plan's network for Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, and Savannah, since many residents see doctors in more than one place.

If you split your year

Seasonal residents need to think about where they will be when they need care. A Medicare Advantage HMO usually limits you to its local network outside of emergencies. A PPO usually gives you more freedom to see out-of-network providers, often at higher cost. A Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, pairs with Original Medicare and can be used with any provider who accepts Medicare anywhere in the country. Which fits best depends on how much you travel and what you want to pay.

Your address decides your plan area

The address you give your plan decides which plans you can join. Moving to or from South Carolina can open a special enrollment period. If you spend part of the year elsewhere, ask about this before you change your address.

Check your doctors and hospital

Before you choose, confirm that each of your doctors, your specialists, and your preferred hospital are in the plan's network. Ask whether you need referrals or prior authorization for the care you use most.
