A well-known local plan is leaving Beaufort County, and plan choices are shrinking across the country. Here is a checklist before December 7.
BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is removing its BlueCross Total (PPO) plan from Beaufort and Charleston counties for 2027, according to a plan-ending tracker. If your Sun City address is in Beaufort County and you have that plan, you will get a letter and will need to choose a new plan. See our full article on the change.
CMS says the average Medicare Advantage premium falls to $12.00 in 2027, from $14.37. KFF reports the typical person will have 35 plans to choose from, down from 39 in 2026. Premiums may look better, but your doctors, drugs, and extra benefits can still change.
Read your Annual Notice of Change if you have one. Check whether your doctors are still in the network. Look up each prescription in the 2027 formulary. Compare the yearly out-of-pocket maximum, not just the premium. Ask what the plan covers for dental, vision, and hearing.
The average stand-alone Part D premium is about $36 a month in 2027, up less than $1. The drug cost inside Medicare Advantage plans averages $7 a month. The yearly out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs is $2,100 in 2026, so check the 2027 amount.
Most plans renew automatically, but a plan that is ending will not. If you got a non-renewal letter, you must choose a new plan or you could end up with Original Medicare only.
