What Part B covers

Part B is the medical side of Original Medicare. It covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some equipment and supplies. Most people pay a monthly premium that is usually taken out of their Social Security check. If you have Medicare Advantage, you still pay the Part B premium, and your plan may add its own premium on top.

The 2026 amounts

The standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026. After you pay the $283 yearly deductible, Part B generally pays 80% of approved amounts and you pay the remaining 20%, with no yearly cap on that 20% in Original Medicare. The Part A deductible is $1,736 for each benefit period.

What is projected for 2027

The Medicare Trustees project a 2027 Part B premium of about $209.50 a month, a deductible of about $292, and a Part A deductible of about $1,788. These are estimates. CMS announces the official amounts in the fall, and they can differ from the projection.

Part A is free for most people

Most people pay no premium for Part A because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. If you did not, you may be able to buy Part A.

High earners pay more

People with higher incomes pay an added amount called IRMAA. See our article on Medicare income-related premiums for the 2026 brackets.

Planning ahead

Because Part B has no yearly out-of-pocket cap in Original Medicare, many people add a Medicare Supplement or choose a Medicare Advantage plan, which does have a yearly cap. Which is better depends on your health, your budget, and which doctors you want to see.
