What Original Medicare covers

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally does not cover routine dental care: cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges or dentures. It can cover some dental services tied to a covered medical need, such as a dental exam before certain procedures. If you want routine dental coverage, you look to a Medicare Advantage plan with dental benefits, a separate dental plan, or paying out of pocket.

What some Medicare Advantage plans add

Many Medicare Advantage plans include dental, but the amount varies a great deal. Preventive dental usually means exams, cleanings and x-rays. Comprehensive dental adds things like fillings, crowns, root canals and sometimes dentures or implants, usually with a yearly maximum and waiting periods. Our guide to preventive vs. comprehensive dental on Medicare Advantage explains the difference.

An example from our area: BlueCross in 2027

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina's 2027 plan page lists Medicare Advantage options in the Lowcountry. This is one insurer, and other companies have different plans and service areas.

Your address decides your options. Sun City sits between Beaufort and Jasper counties, and plans are sold by county. A neighbor's dental benefit may not be available at your address.

How to check your dental coverage before you book

  • Look up the plan's dental benefit summary: preventive, basic and major services, and the yearly maximum.
  • Ask whether major work like crowns, dentures or implants has a waiting period.
  • Call the office and ask whether it participates with your exact plan name, not just the insurance company.
  • Ask for a written treatment estimate before any work is done.
  • Re-check every January. Plans and networks can change from year to year.
